The brim of all our hats is usually braided. The following items are exceptions: EUROPEO ESPECIAL, AUSTIN, GOLF-CAP, and HABANA.
In the Habana model, the brim is edged with a fabric in the same color as the grosgrain ribbon.
Only in a few exceptions is the hat edge sewn in models where the hat edge would have to be braided into itself, but this does not affect the quality or shape of the hat.

YES!! It's a free service for our customers. However, please note that the hat you order will be treated as a special order and cannot be returned. The silicone can no longer be removed from the hat.

Generally, half a size larger is enough, meaning half a centimeter of space, to ensure the hat fits comfortably. This is recommended because the hat is a natural product, much like wood. However, it's all a matter of taste; some customers prefer their hats a little tighter rather than looser. Normally, I would recommend rounding up to 58 cm, as we only offer half or full hat sizes as a tolerance for rounding.

To begin with, a Panama hat is immediately recognizable by the rosette at the top of the crown. This rosette is the starting point of the hat's weaving. The number of layers, which also partially comprise the rosette, is also important.

There are three styles of Panama hats . The Montecristi Panama is the most beautiful and luxurious Panama hat. There's also the Cuenca , recognizable by its herringbone pattern, and the Cuenca , which has a more airy shape and consists of small squares or diamond patterns. The Brisa is lighter and has better ventilation than the other styles, making it a great hat for spring and summer.

The quality and price of a Panama hat shop is determined by the fineness of the straw and the quality of the weaving machine. The tighter the weave, the tighter and more stable the Panama will be, and the higher the quality. Quality is determined by the following characteristics of the hat: flexibility, lightness, and durability.

Most of our original Panama hats can be customized due to their quality and flexibility.

If you read the description of each of our Panama hats carefully, you can see whether it can be rolled or not.

Basically, it depends on several factors whether you can roll one of our products or not, these are:

    1. The shape of the hat, its flexibility or stiffness.
    2.   If the required moisture is no longer present, breakage can occur when rolling the hat .

Although some of our products are ideally shaped and designed to be folded, we do not recommend doing so.

How do you roll a Panama hat?

Basically we can summarize as follows:

    1. Push the folds outward. Most hats have one or more folds in the crown area.
    2. Fold lengthwise. Fold the hat lengthwise until it is nice and flat. ...
    3. Roll up from the back. Roll up the hat from back to front. ...
    4. Complete!

We invite you to read our blog as well.

Silicone reinforcement inside the front of the hat

A silicone reinforcement is applied to the inner part of the crown. This strengthens the hat opening from the inside and makes it shatter-proof.

What are the advantages and disadvantages?

    Advantage:

    • Slightly more stable crown or hat opening area.
    • Protects against damage in this area
    • Holds the fibers together and thus the original shape.

    Disadvantage:

    • A little heavier (approx. 30 to 80 grams).
    • Prevents or interferes with folding or rolling.
    • Not suitable for people with a silicone allergy.

Is silicone non-toxic or dangerous? Silicone consists of chains of silicon and oxygen, the individual building blocks of which are called siloxanes.
So far, only limited data have been collected on possible health risks from siloxanes.

According to current knowledge, pure silicone is non-toxic and rarely causes allergies. Unlike most plastics, it also contains no plasticizers.

The world's most expensive hat was sold in the USA for $100,000.

We're deliberately omitting names for privacy reasons, but a US dealer claims to have sold the most expensive Montecristi hat ever, for $100,000. Since we know the hat maker/ artisan, who lives in the village of Pile in the canton of Montecristi, this is certainly a realistic price; he's a master of his craft.

The skilled weaver took more than eight months to carefully craft the hat according to his most emblematic patterns. All this work is reflected in its high price, but also in its exquisite quality.

It takes him at least six months or around 1,000 hours to weave a hat that is incomparable. Production is not scalable. No one can support him. His skills are unique. And only a few milliners keep this art alive, and there is also a lack of Young talent, as there are other exciting and easier ways to earn money in this modern world.
    These hats are art.
Style is a very important factor for people and everyone wants to have their own style.

A hat is not only a fashion accessory, but also an important protection from the sun or rain. To maintain the shape of your hat and enjoy it for a long time, you should follow a few care tips. In this article, you'll learn how to maintain the shape of your hat and what important care measures are.

Protect your hat from direct heat

To maintain the shape of your hat, protect it from direct heat. Avoid storing your hat near radiators or other heat sources. The heat can damage the material of your hat and change its shape.

    Avoid direct sunlight

You should also protect your hat from direct sunlight to prevent it from drying out. Store your hat in a cool, dry place when not in use to maintain its shape and color.

Store the hat on a flat surface

To maintain the shape of your hat, always store it on a flat, clean surface. Avoid storing your hat on uneven or sloping surfaces long-term, as this can compromise the shape of your hat and cause the brim to bend.

You can also use a fabric bag specifically designed for the shape of your hat. This can be washed but not tumble dried.

You can order a hat storage bag here .

    Avoid moisture

It's especially important not to let your hat get completely soaked, for example, if you're standing in the rain. Moisture can damage the material and affect its shape. If your hat does get wet, don't place it on a heater to dry it. The heat can damage the material and change its shape.

One way to protect yourself from UV rays is to wear a hat. Hats can shield part of your head and face from direct sunlight, thus reducing UV exposure.

However, not every hat provides the same level of protection against UV rays. The protective effect of a hat depends on various factors, such as:

    - Hat shape: A wide-brimmed hat offers more protection than a narrow-brimmed hat or a cap. A wide brim can also cover the ears, neck, and part of the shoulders, providing additional protection.

    - The material of the hat : A hat made of dense, dark straw will block more UV rays than one made of thin, light straw. A fabric with a special coating or impregnation can also reduce UV transmission.

    - The condition of the hat: A hat that is wet or dirty loses its protective effect because it lets more UV rays through.

A Panama hat is a traditional straw hat from Ecuador, often worn in the summer. It has a typical Bogart shape with a medium-wide brim and a grosgrain ribbon around the crown. It is made of toquilla straw, which is obtained from the leaves of a type of palm tree.

A Panama hat can offer some protection from UV rays because it has a brim and is made of a natural material. However, the level of protection a Panama hat provides varies depending on its quality and craftsmanship . The finer the toquilla straw is woven, the denser the fabric and the less UV rays it allows through.

There are various methods for measuring the protective effect of a Panama hat . One of these is the so-called UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor), which indicates how many times longer you can stay in the sun wearing the hat than without it without getting sunburned.

For example, a UPF value of 50+ means you can stay in the sun 50 times longer than without a hat.

The UPF value of a Panama hat depends on its weaving quality. The higher the weaving quality, the higher the UPF value.

For example, a Panama hat with a Brisa weave has a UPF value of 80 , while a Panama hat with a Cuenca weave has a UPF value of 40+ .

However, you should not only pay attention to the UPF value of a Panama hat , but also consider other factors such as the time of day, geographical location, or skin type. It's also important to remember that a Panama hat alone is not enough to provide complete protection from UV rays .

You should always wear sunglasses and apply sunscreen with a high sun protection factor (SPF).

In summary, a Panama hat provides moderate to high protection against UV

When it comes to choosing an original Panama hat, first-time users often have many questions.

Tips and tricks for handling your new original Panama hat

An original Panama hat is a hand-woven straw hat (made from the fine straw of the Carludovica palm trees) from Latin America, which was first produced in the 17th century. Century in Ecuador. It is characterized by its lightness, breathability and high quality.    The circular pattern on the top of the hand-woven braid on the crown of the original Panama hat can be an important distinguishing feature. This pattern is created using the "jumping" technique, in which the braiding threads are woven in a spiral pattern to create a circular pattern.

The pattern on a genuine Panama hat is usually uniform and symmetrical, whereas on cheaper hats it is often irregular or asymmetrical. Furthermore, an authentic Panama hat is made from genuine toquilla straw, which comes from the plant of the same name, native to Ecuador. The quality of the straw and the care taken in its production also contribute to its distinction.

Another characteristic of a genuine Panama hat is the flexibility of the material. If you gently squeeze the hat and then release, it should quickly spring back to its original shape. Cheaper hats can be stiff and not return to shape as quickly.

Finally, there are also differences in the craftsmanship of the brim, the edge of the hat. In an authentic Panama hat, the brim is carefully sewn and shaped to achieve a perfect curve and fit. In cheaper hats, the stitching may be sloppy, and the brim may be flat or unevenly shaped.

To see the differences, watch our video here

In summary, you can distinguish a genuine Panama hat from a cheap one based on the circular pattern, the quality of the toquilla straw, the flexibility of the material, and the craftsmanship of the brim. However, it's always best to purchase the hat from a reputable dealer and pay attention to the certificate of authenticity to ensure you're getting a genuine original.

It usually only takes a few hours or days for a Panama hat to adapt to the individual head shape and fit more comfortably.

To speed up the registration process, it is recommended to wear the hat regularly.

As you wear it, the hat will naturally stretch and adjust to fit your head perfectly. However, it's important that the hat isn't too tight, as otherwise it can become uncomfortable and wear out faster.

Your original Panama hat is designed for everyday use and can be worn at any time.

Avoid folding or squeezing your hat.

Store it in an airy bag and make sure it is not stacked.

You can also use a fabric bag specifically designed for the shape of your hat. This can be washed but not tumble dried.

Use an airy bag or hat case to transport your hat safely while traveling.

Avoid squeezing the hat or storing it in a tight space.

    ROLLS OF ORIGINAL PANAMA HATS!

Most of our original Panama hats can be customized due to their quality and flexibility roll it up, but it should not be bent.

If you've ordered a Panama hat from us, you can check the product description to see if the hat is rollable. There you'll find all the information you need about whether the hat is flexible enough to be rolled up and stored in your suitcase.

However, if the original shape of your hat is important to you, you should avoid rolling it up better to do without.

If you do roll up your hat, you do so at your own risk.

    Please note the following:
To roll it up, grasp the inside of the hat and press upwards in the center of the crown. Then fold the hat in half so that both brims lie flat on top of each other with the inside facing out. Make sure the hat is not bent!
Finally, roll the hat up from the side like an ice cream cone. On one side, the crown of the hat forms the peak, and on the other side, the rolled brim is slightly wider.

    Other information:
It's best to store it in humid rooms. A hat that's too dry should never be rolled.
Nevertheless, the Panama hat is not suitable for heavy rain, as it can lose its ironed shape if it gets very wet. No original Panama hat is completely waterproof.

However, we would like to point out that you do this at your own risk, as we do not recommend rolling it up.

Avoid wearing your hat in the rain. Store it in an airy bag and allow it to dry completely before wearing it again.

You can also use a fabric bag specifically designed for the shape of your hat. This can be washed but not tumble dried.

You can order a hat storage bag here .

Your Panama hat should sit comfortably on your head without being too tight or too loose. You can either pull the hat low on your forehead or place it a little higher for more shade.

Be careful not to wear the hat too far back on your head, as this can be impractical and uncomfortable.

We hope these answers to some of your questions about the original Panama hat have been helpful. If you have any further questions or need help choosing the right hat, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Questions about the history, origin and qualities of Panama hats.

Everything you need to know about Panama hats: origin, types and qualities

A Panama hat is a handmade hat made from the fine straw of the toquilla palm, produced in Ecuador. It is known for its quality and its unique ability to protect against the sun.

The hat gets its name from the fact that it was exported to the USA and Europe via Panama in the 19th century.

The hat is known for its lightweight and breathable quality and its ability to block UV rays. Panama hats come in a variety of styles and qualities, from simple and inexpensive to high-end and expensive versions that are often worn as a status symbol.

The Panama hat originated in Ecuador, where it has been made by indigenous weavers for centuries.

There are different types of Panama hats, varying in shape, quality, and size. The most popular include the Fedora, Montecristi, and Cuenca hats.

The quality of a Panama hat depends on the number of woven threads per square inch.   The higher the number of threads, the higher the quality and the more expensive the hat.

There are several types of Panama hats, each differing in origin and quality. The two most popular are the Cuenca hat and the Montecristi hat.

The Cuenca hat is made in the city of Cuenca, Ecuador, and is a more affordable alternative to the Montecristi hat. It is made from slightly coarser toquilla straw and has a simpler weaving technique than the Montecristi hat. The circular pattern on the top of the Cuenca hat is often more irregular and asymmetrical than that of the Montecristi hat.

The Montecristi hat, on the other hand, is made in the Montecristi region of Ecuador and is considered the highest quality standard for Panama hats. It is made from the finest and softest toquilla straw and requires intricate handcrafting. The weaving technique is very fine, and the circular pattern on the top of the hat is symmetrical and even. The Montecristi hat is also very flexible and can be easily folded without losing its shape.

There are also other styles of Panama hats, such as the Fedora or the Gambler. However, these hats generally have the same quality differences as the Cuenca and Montecristi hats, depending on the region they come from and how they are made.

In summary, we can say that Panama hats vary in quality and origin. The Cuenca hat is a more affordable alternative, while the Montecristi hat is considered the highest quality. Both hats have different weaving techniques and circular patterns on the top that distinguish them from each other.

Although it's called a Panama hat, it originated in Ecuador, where it has been made since the 17th century. UNESCO has recognized the art of weaving hats from toquilla fibers as an intangible cultural heritage.
There are different weaving techniques and quality levels of the Panama hat , which vary depending on the place of origin and the fineness of the fibers.
The main production sites are Montecristi and Jipijapa in the province of Manabí and Cuenca in the province of Azuay.
In Cuenca and surrounding villages, several weaving techniques are used, but we will only present the two most important ones: "Brisa and Cuenca".
In this post, we will introduce the differences between these three types of Panama hats and the quality.

    Quality of Panama hats

The quality of Panama hats is determined according to different systems:

One system is based on the number of rings (vueltas) in the crown. However, this system is not particularly accurate, as weavers work with different weaving styles.

Another system is based on the density of fibers (counts) per square inch. Finally, there is a grade system, but it is not uniformly defined. Generally, the higher the grade, the finer the quality of the hat.

    Types of Panama Hats

    Montecristi-Hats

Montecristi hats are considered the finest and most expensive Panama hats in the world. They are woven by skilled hat weavers in the town of Montecristi or in surrounding villages. The fibers are split very thin and boiled, dried, and bleached several times to achieve high flexibility and brightness. The weaving technique is very complex and requires great skill and patience.
The most famous and highest quality Panama hats come from the Montecristi region, where master weavers have centuries of experience and skill .
A Montecristi hat can take up to eight months to complete.
The quality of a Panama hat is measured by the fineness and density of the fibers per square inch, which also determines its grade. The higher the grade, the finer and denser the weave and the more expensive the hat.
A top-quality Panama hat can have up to 90 fibers per square inch and take several months to make.
A Montecristi hat is known for its fine texture, uniform color, and silky sheen. It is offered exclusively in natural colors and can only be dyed in exceptional cases and upon explicit customer request.

    Flechttechniken In Cuenca.

    Braiding technique "Basin"

Cuenca hats are the most widely produced and exported Panama hats from Ecuador. They are mainly woven in the city of Cuenca or surrounding communities.
The fibers are split slightly thicker than those of Montecristi hats and are boiled, dried, and bleached less frequently. The braiding technique is simpler and faster than that of Montecristi hats .
A Cuenca hat can take anywhere from one day to a week to complete. This refers only to the hand-knitting process and does not take into account the various subsequent processes, such as steam pressing in a special mold (to maintain the hat's shape) and the final sewing and ironing by a seamstress for a perfect finish.
The quality of a Cuenca hat is measured by the grade (fibers per square inch).
The weight of a Cuenca hat can range from 100 to 300 grams.
A Cuenca hat is characterized by its robust structure, its diverse colors and its matte shine.

    Braiding technique "Breeze"

Brisa hats are a special type of Panama hat that is woven only in a few places in Ecuador. They have a distinctive pattern of small holes or diamonds in the weave. The fibers are split and processed in a similar way to Cuenca hats . However, the weaving technique is different from that of other types of Panama hats . Instead of braiding from the center to the brim, the braiding begins with a ring at the brim and works toward the center. A Brisa hat can take between two days and a month to complete. The quality of a Brisa hat is measured by the diameter of the ring at the brim, which can range from 6 cm (Brisa Fina) to 12 cm (Brisa Super Fina).

The Brisa technique is one of the newer braiding techniques and is also known as "ligustri." It was developed in the 1980s by a craftsman from Cuenca and is characterized by its light texture and flexibility. In this technique, the fibers are braided in a loose and open weave, allowing for better air circulation. This technique is often used because it is lightweight and comfortable to wear.

    Summary :

The quality of a Panama hat can be determined by the number of woven threads per Quadratzoll and the even distribution of the threads on the crown and brim of the hat.

Original Panama hats are more expensive than other hats due to the complex manufacturing processes and the high-quality material used.

These hats are handcrafted by master weavers in Ecuador from the finest toquilla straw, making them extremely rare and valuable. The art of weaving these hats is a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage and is passed down from generation to generation.
Unfortunately, there are fewer and fewer master weavers and no or very few successors who want or can continue this tradition.
This means that the number of original Montecristi hats is becoming increasingly scarce and their value is constantly rising. Anyone who owns or acquires one can consider themselves fortunate to be wearing and preserving a piece of history and craftsmanship.

And what should you pay attention to when buying?

    Here are some tips:

A genuine Montecristi hat has a fine and even braid, ranging from 10 to 40 threads per inch, depending on the quality. The finer the braid, the higher the price.
A genuine Montecristi hat has a natural color that can vary from light beige to dark brown. It is not bleached or dyed.
A genuine Montecristi hat has an antiperspirant cotton or leather inner band for comfort and hygiene. It also has a fabric or leather hatband that decorates and stabilizes the hat.
A genuine Montecristi hat has a unique shape, customized by the milliner to the customer's taste. There are various models available, such as the Classic, Havana, Diamante, Optimo, and Gambler.
A genuine Montecristi hat comes with a certificate of authenticity stating the weaver's name and the hat's quality. It is often also hand-signed by the weaver.

Handcrafted by master weavers in Ecuador from the finest toquilla straw, they are therefore very rare and valuable.

Panama hats are handcrafted from the fine straw of the toquilla palm. The process involves weaving threads on special looms and shaping the hat on wooden or metal molds.

The best materials for Panama hats are the fibers of the toquilla palm, grown in Ecuador. These fibers are soft, supple, and durable, which helps make Panama hats among the highest quality hats on the market.

To keep your Panama hat in good condition, you should protect it from dust and moisture and clean it regularly with a soft brush or a damp cloth

A Panama hat can last for many years if properly cared for. Durability also depends on the quality of the hat and how often it is used.

If your Panama hat is damaged, it is best to take it to a professional to have it repaired.

The repair requires special knowledge and tools to repair the fibers and restore the shape of the hat.

It is not advisable to attempt to repair it yourself, as you could further damage the material and render the hat unusable.

Since the Panama hat is made by hand, repairing it requires special skills and techniques that only experienced craftsmen can master.

When you have your hat repaired in Ecuador, you can be assured that it will be repaired by a qualified expert who has the necessary know-how and the right tools to restore the hat to its original condition.

We are currently not offering any repairs in Germany.

Here's how to easily repair it yourself!

A Panama hat is not only a fashion accessory, but also a handcrafted masterpiece made of the finest straw. Even with careful handling, it can sometimes crack.

However, such damage doesn't have to spell doom for your beloved Panama hat. This article will teach you how to repair a tear in your Panama hat to breathe new life into it and make it wearable again. However, the tear will never heal completely.

Understand the materials of your Panama hat

Before you begin repairing your Panama hat, it's important to understand the materials used. Panama hats are traditionally made from toquilla straw, a natural material that's lightweight yet durable.

    Clean the hat thoroughly

Before beginning the repair, you should thoroughly clean the hat to remove any dirt and dust. Use a soft brush or lint-free cloth to gently brush the hat. Make sure the hat is completely dry before proceeding with the repair.

    Preparation of the repair material

To repair a tear in your Panama hat, you'll need a suitable adhesive. Make sure to choose one that's suitable for fabric and doesn't contain harsh chemicals. A fabric-safe adhesive is best for this type of repair. Alternatively , you can try applying a thinner strip of silicone from the back. This method holds the pieces together and is also flexible.

Place the hat on a stable surface

To effectively repair the crack, place the hat on a stable surface, such as a table or work surface. Make sure the hat is lying flat and no unnecessary tension is applied to the crack.

    Carefully gluing the crack

Apply the adhesive along the tear. Use a small amount of adhesive, being careful not to over-wet the hat. Then gently press the two edges of the tear together and hold them in place for a few minutes to ensure the adhesive adheres.

Tip!: Apply a piece of non-permanent adhesive tape to the left and right of the tear. This will make it easier to remove the adhesive later, and you don't want it to get onto other parts of the hat.

Let it dry and check the repair

Leave the hat in a well-ventilated area and dry the adhesive according to the instructions on the packaging. Be careful not to move or deform the hat while the adhesive dries.

If you prefer the adhesive method, we recommend applying a thin, finger-width layer of silicone for additional reinforcement. Overlap it at least 1 cm before and after the crack.

Once dry, check the repair by gently pulling on the crack to make sure it is firmly held together.

Final cleaning and care of the hat

Once the adhesive has completely dried and the repair has been successful, clean the hat again to remove any remaining adhesive. Use a soft brush or lint-free cloth to gently clean the hat. You can then wear the hat as usual.

    Conclusion

Repairing a tear in your Panama hat requires care and patience, but with the right materials and steps, it's possible to breathe new life into your hat. By carefully gluing the tear and properly caring for your hat, you can ensure it lasts for years to come.

However, remember that in case of major damage, it is always advisable to consult a professional hat maker to ensure proper repair.

Please note, however, that craftsmen and materials for repairing Panama hats are generally only available in Ecuador. Therefore, outside of Ecuador, only temporary repairs are possible to limit the damage. Due to legal requirements and the associated warranty, we are unfortunately unable to offer this service .

However, with these tips you can repair small cracks yourself and continue to wear your Panama hat with pride.

Improper handling and storage of Panama hats can lead to potential damage!

The most common damage to a Panama hat is tears, holes, or deformation of the surfaces, as these are extremely delicate. For example, it's possible for the hat to be damaged by sitting on it or rolling it up, especially if it's not sufficiently flexible.

Too much moisture or heat radiation.

You should also ensure that the hat is not exposed to excessive moisture or heat radiation. Extreme humidity and prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause the hat's fibers to expand or dry out more quickly.

To avoid damage, it is also very important to always follow our care instructions.

Proper handling and care of your Panama hat are crucial to prevent damage and extend its lifespan.

Panama hats have many uses, from fashion to function.

Some of the most common uses include protection from the sun and UV rays, especially during outdoor activities like hiking, fishing, or gardening. They can also be worn as a fashion accessory to complement an outfit or create a casual look. Panama hats are also popular at formal events like weddings or garden parties, adding a touch of elegance and style.
